Sump welding

Hey guys. I bought an engine from a wreck and the sump has a hole/crack in it from doing laps in the engine bay. The hole is on the side/front up near the engine and not in the lower part that bolts on. My questions are can this be welded easily? is this a structural component of the engine? should it be welded on or off the engine?

Hi Matt,
it should be welded off the engine, and providing you (or the person welding it) clamps the sump to some nice thick steel (I used 10mm steel plate) it shouldn't warp too much. Just to be safe on my one I had the whole ali sump pan heated evenly after the welding to 'relax' it and minimise warpage.
