Reving by its self!!!

Hi, this is the first time ive done this hope im in the right section.
The other day i went to start my car and the dash started flashing saying battery not charging in japanese, then the car started reving by its self up and down. My first guess is the alternator, but im not sure about the reving thing has anyone ever had this problem. I also checked the power steering pump to check for leaks its seem ok. Thanks for your help.

I had the same thing happen when my alternator died and I had to drive as far as I could (was on my way home form holidays). Just before the battery completely died it started doing that so dont worry about it - just replace your alternator.

Thanks Damien just pulled the alternator out today the two nuts where the earth cable connects are badly corroded not sure what that means, but getting the alternator checked tomorrow

It might be a good idea to check the power steer pump for leaks. This apparently can cause an alternator to fail if the pump is leaking.
