Hey guys,
I'm very interested in finding out who you guys get to insure your cars after they have had a conversion.

1). What is the modified car (include modifications)
2). Who are u insured with
3). What type of insurance (3rd party, full cover)
4). How much you pay a year
5). Premium?
6). Advice.

Thanks
Its all nice have dreams of a hybrid but are u able to get insurance on them afterwards ?

i had an insurance quote written up before i even started thinking about the conversion... being a late model import, it was already gonna cost alot no questions about it. But while i was at it, i had the quote written for all future mods also.

car in question is a jza80 supra... completed future mods will see it converted to v8 twin turbo 6spd with all the good bits... and i mean all the options the just car website gives... i was only after a rough estimate..

with just car (only guys who would insure such an outrageous car/conversion)... i was quoted around the $5.5K for comprehensive (23, lost licence once in last 5 years for fine default, rating 4 so far)...

it isnt alot considering the car, my rating, and my bad questionable driving record (we were all 18 once right??).

You tried Shannons ? I hear they are always cheaper than the just cars (just cars are underwritten by AAMI)

If you want to insure a modified car and drive it every day Shannon's can't help you. They only insure cars that are driven occassionally.

Just Cars have the market in young drivers, import cars and modified cars. Remember with Just Cars they pick your repairer not you, so it goes to the cheapest.

For drivers 25+ the market opens up a bit.

You have Prestige Underwriting in Sydney, MB Prestige Underwriting in most capitals, Unique Car Underwriting in Melbourne (but do not insure anything in the Sydney conurbation), Famous Insurance in Perth and lastly Dawes Motor Underwriting Group in Sydney.

The younger you are the tougher it will be. Most of us (I'm one of the above company's) will require a copy of the engineers report to see it all complies, a few photographs and perhaps a valuation from a Loss Assessor.

Simply tell them everything you have done, and be straight up about your traffic and accident record and you should get insurance.

Whilst my industry is populated by brain-dead employees who know nothing about cars (and most likely insurance!) the above specialists usually have a car aware person on board you can talk to.

Who for insurance - can't beat shannons!

You can't beat shannons guys, - had my V6 Fj insured through them ($700) per year (with a clean record). They are talking the same figures for my eh v8 turbo. They insure the driver and the use, not the vehicle. There was a good writeup in the editorial in the current zoom magazine, he had similair problems and was impressed when he rang them. I have four vehicles insured with them and they do monthly debits from a credit card.

Thanks Zuffen and Edz and co, great info...

I know you guys can't give a correct/definative answer.... but what BALLPARK figure would insurance cost for the following

s14 200sx
converted to 1uz-fe R154 manual (supra box)
running aftermarket management
custom exhaust
Cams
possibly 8 throttle bodies...
living in eastern suburbs Melb
AGE:25
No driving offences
1 claim (minor incident when i was 18)
No claims since then.

DRizt,

Whilst I would need a lot more info to give a firm price, and a sum insured I have worked on the basis you drive it daily but not to work and have it insured for $20,000.

You would expect a premium of $12-1,300.00 (all up) with an excess of $750.00.

Not too scary. Of interest the standard 200SX would cost you around $1,125.00

Note I am not saying which company I am. This is not our core business and I would shop all the companies mentioned. When you get a Ferrari let me know as they are our specialty.

Thanks heaps... Thats a lot better than i would have expected.....

Gees not to much more than a standard 200sx... i guess it comes down to being 25 and over.....

I'm 23 now, but i will be 25 when i finish the project...

Much appreciated...

How bout the rest of you guys, what cars do u have insured and for how much

hehe... yeah it sucks being 23... i'll be close to 25 when i finish mine also... by then it would have been more than 5 years since any major incident/claim so hopefully the situation will be better for me then...

till then i think i'll make do with quiktrak gps and third party insurance.

R-Jay,

You are doing the smart thing.

You have the car reasonably well protected by the GPS. Don't ask how many "tracked" cars I am missing. Plus you are maintaining an insurance history you can call upon when you need it.

Keep your third party property damage policy current as it will entitle you to a no claim bonus/discount when you convert to a full policy. Your actions will save you heaps.

To everyone else; don't be dumb and drive around without insurance against damaging other people's property. There are a lot of $400,000.00 plus cars out there. Write one off without insurance and you will be broke for life.

End of free advice.

24.
a few speeding fines, nothing major.
1UZFE 4.0L V8 into Datsun 240C - valued at $7500
$815 a year full comprehensive if driven under 15,000ks per year - thru TORQUE insurance

I will vouch for Zuffen shannons are usless if it is a daily driver. will not insure it for any money.

JUst car would insure me fot $3200 PREMIUM $1100 excess and value of $4500 as i paid $3500 for the car initally they would only add value of wheels and radio.
That is absurd who are they kidding

Don't know what you guys know about shannons, but the above statements are don't match my many experiences with them.

Shannons, will insure you. They have no problems with daily drivers. I have never had a problem getting engine converted cars and very heavily modified cars insured with them. All daily drivers. Or maube its different for them here in the ACT.

They insure my current car, 89 fairlane, with unlimeted Kms (which I need) and agrred value which doesn't change. With all its mods, 1uzfe, full suspension changes, full brake changes, custom interior. From memory the premium is around $900. A fairly low excess and 1 free windscreen a year to boot.

My insurance experiences

1991 Toyota Cressida Grande
im 22

RACV - Stock - $9000 market value - Premium = $2000 - Excess = $850
AAMI - Stock - $9000 Agreed value - Premium = $2050 - Excess = $950

Just Cars - 1UZ-FE & Brake Upgrade, new alloys - $9000 market value - Premium $1180 - Excess $850

now thats just plain wrong

still have stock car, paying for 3rd party with racv for $340 a year odd.

cseufert,

I don't see it as wrong. I see each company has priced it's product to allow it to operate in it's chosen market sector.

My company doesn't look to actively compete in this sector of the market but bring on a Ferrari or Lamborghini and we are in our element then no one in Australia can get near us.

I see the same happening in things like tyres. Michelin tyres are about as expensive as they get and Khumo the other end of the scale. They both allow cars to drive on the road but one wants to sell a gazillion each year at $10.00 per tyre profit the other only a million at $50.00 per tyre profit.

Insurance is like good wine. You pay cheap it comes in a cardboard box. You pay good money and it comes in a bottle and tastes nice.

Some people may remember HIH Insurance. Went broke in 2001 owing $4,000,000,000 because its premiums did not cover its calims. Cheap insurance is just that cheap.
