Had to do something in the engine bay and in a hurry to get the project finished (as it has been dragging on for too long now) i removed the engine without thinking and didnt unbolt the torque convertor so it came out with it.
Now im trying to refit it and it does'nt want to go.

My question is; Is this ('90 model celsior engine and box) the type where the gearbox input shaft has to be removed, fitted to the converter and then slid back in with a circlip doing the locking function or can i use the "3 clicks" method when the shafts line up?

Have been mucking around with this for a while and have figured out that somehow the splines either in the torque convertor or gearbox have moved and no longer lining up. would this have damaged something? I came across a cheap a340 box the other day (i have the a341) from a supra i have been told that these boxes are essentially the same apart from the first gear and that the a340 has faster shifts. Im assumming then that the splines would be identical? Im hoping to grab this box, swap the torque converters off each to see where the movement has occured. Others thoughts on this?

The only part you "could" damage is the oil seal on the front of the pump.

It can be a real fiddle to get it right so you need to have a look at where the drive dogs are on the pump so you know the correct alignment for the T/C.

Perservere and it will go back together.

I have never had trouble like this putiing on a torque converter before. I have spent about 4 hours on it.
Does anyone know if the two splines on the input shaft are independant? I do have a feeling that either one has moved or something has broken inside the torque converter itself.
I have decided though to put everything back together (without TC attached) finish off the wiring to get the engine started and take it to a specialist. While they figure out the problem they can shim the accumulators etc. for better shifts and modify the piping to attach to the mercedes cooler.

Replace the front seal too... Its a pain in the tit to do later.

Spin it around, and lift and keep kind of squaring it up and pushing as you turn it, it will slide straight on. Its going to slide straight on when it sits perfectly square.

I rotate the TC and try and square it up pushing and rotating, then lift the gearbox onto the bell and have a friend get the first few bolts started.

Double check too, that you have removed the plate that bolts to the front of the bellhousing, this could be causing it to jam. Particularly if you left the thing on as you removed it from the motor. Its a tiny inspection plate for the flex plate and to do the flex plate bolts up to the torque converter.

Engine is completely out of the car. Putting TC back on the gearbox by itself. Its a matter of the splines not being aligned not the oil pump. Something has moved either in the box or most likely in the converter.

ahh... doesnt sound right, try and use a small timber dowel (not so small it snaps off in there) and see if you can maybe realign the gears that have moved??
