Gear shifter

Hi guys i have a 1uz-fe from a early 90's crown front cut i have fitted into my Hilux. I want to run an electronic LED gear selector display remote from my auto gear shifter. Is it possible to pick up on wires somewhere to identify which gear i am in?

Use the S1 and S2 wires that go to the gearbox - they are solenoid 1 and solenoid 2. Use Kdogs wiring diagrams (presume you would have these if u've done a conversion already)

They work like this...
1st gear = S1 on S2 off
2nd gear = S1 on and S2 on
3rd gear = S1 off and S2 on
4th gear = S1 off and S2 off

The trans computer sends 12v to the solenoid (the other end is grounded in the trans). Look out for a back EMF spike as the solenoid is an inductive load.

On the side of the 'box there is a switch network that tells the PCM what position the shift lever is in, page 2 of this doc shows how it works.....

Of course you can combine both the solenid status and lever position to display the true gear the 'box is in.
