How hard is it to remove this and give it a clean anyone know of a step by step instruction for this or is it one of those things as soon as you look at it you know whats going on... Any recommendations what too clean it with

This is a relatively easy procedure. Remove the rear seat and backrest. Directly in the center of the fuel tank you will see a metal plate with 8 or so small bolts. Remove this plate and this will give you access to the fuel pump. Carefully remove the fuel pump and associated parts. You will likely want to have some plastic or a tarp by this step in order to remove the fuel pump without fuel dripping everywhere inside your car. From here you will have the general idea, as you say, of what needs to be done to clean the fuel pumps pickup mesh. When I did this I simply used some extra seafoam I had around to clean the screen. But I assume you can also use water as long as you allow it to dry before reassembling the pump into the fuel tank. Good luck

On my car 90ls i can see 2 plates from inside the boot both in the centre one is facing directly up 1 is facing 45' towards you , so is there a 3rd one behind the seat

I dont know what 'inside the boot is?'.. but I assume you are looking from the rear view of the fuel tank. I also have a 904hundred and you are right there is a plate on the backside of the fuel tank that i believe is the electronic float for the fuel guage. There is a plate on top also if I remember mine correct. But the fuel pump resides on the backside of the rear backrest part of the seat. You can remove the sitting portion of the back seat by releasing the two clamps on each side directly below the middle portion of the two sitting areas- lift up and out. Then the rear seat backrest has four bolts on the bottom side -two in the middle connecting the seatbelt recievers to the car and two on each outter portion of the backrest hidden by little flaps of leather. Once these bolts are out lift the backrest upwards in order to lift it over the metal L hooks that hold it firmly inplace and against the metal. There will be a center hole with access to the 3rd plate usually covered by insulating material. This is where you will find the fuel pump.
