I think my turbo is coking but i am not sure. I am getting some white/blue smoke with excessive and prolong acceleration. However, I noticed the problem is getting worst. I have to confess i dont cool down the engine before shutting it off. I am using a an oil restrictor with straight oil return line. I found a great article about turbo diagnose and troubleshoot from Turbo City.

Could smoking issue be a cause of BOV? I notice when i rev my engine, i hear air flow out of the compressor and seems like air escape from there. Is it possible the air is forcing the compressor seal and increase CHRA oil pressure and the oil pressure is escape via the turbine seal?

When you have a chance, remove both the compressor housing and center cartridge of the turbo. Inspect the compressor housing to see if oil has been slung around inside, and check the intercooler pipes for oil residue. Also, check inside the turbine housing with the center cartridge removed for oil sludge pooling at the bottom. If you find excessive oil front or back, then your turbo seals may be letting go.

Try switching to 5W-30, and ensuring that the oil feed is a -3, and that the oil return is a straight -10, and that the return is not clogged in any way.

Thanks man, I love this site,

Eric

Hmmm...there should be a lot more in the turbine housing then. A nice sludge pooled at the bottom. I had a problem with a kinked return line back in March, and it would smoke terribly. There was oil in both the compressor housing , and the turbine housing indicating the seal beginning to let go.

I got a rebuild kit already and will be installing it next week. I have -12 AN return line with .065" restrictor.

How is your crank case wentilation setup?

If you have the oil return line from the turbo routed to the oilpan (most common setup) and to much pressure inside the crank case, the turbo won´t get the oil out and the turbo will wear out fast, increasing oil pressure to compensate or using a larger restrictor will blow the oilseal inside the turbo.
