Hey I'm looking to put 1U into my hilux and from what I've read it can be pretty costly and a bit of messing around... I was wondering if I was to keep the factory auto trans on the motor would it reduce the amount of work needed to put it in? I'm trying to keep costs down at the moment because I'm an apprentice but I would put a W58 or r154 behind it sometime in the future... Any help is appreciated
Cheers

It would indeed, I installed a 1uz into a colt and opted for keeping the std gearbox because that would avoid costly mods to the drive-train, I basically just designed an adapter plate to match the std colts bell-housing to the engine, then just made a flywheel to the desired thickness to get the gearbox to sit where it should, such that the clutch release mechanism would function again.

SO you should be able to do exactly that for the std Hilux gearbox, and since it is auto, you won't need the flywheel.

like so

A G52 from behind a 22r is just OK for a 1uz when driven normally. If using them we run a really good oil and dont go too heavy on the clutch. If you want to do burnouts then that will reduce their lifespan. Using the stock box you will still need to mod(lengthen) the driveshaft a bit. Theres plenty of info out there or you can buy a full set of instruction notes. Cheers
