wheres this oil coming from?

well im finally getting around to replacing that knock sensor, ive noticed oil in these little pockets next to the intake port things, not sure what to call them

on the drivers side theres oil in there, and on the passenger side theres what appears to be gravel

so, wtf? wheres this stuff coming from?

with winter 2 blocks away i need to know if my heater valve missing a tube would explain why it works sometimes and other times it just blows cold air

I wouldn't worry too much..
Mine was like that too...
I suspect at one time oil "may" have spilt over the top of engine at some time...
