Been stripping my 1UZ today (and more tomorrow) and been busy untangling millions of shredded bits of cam belt.

I bought the engine untested so fair enough, but it's a right pain in the arse and god knows what else I'll find! ! ! ! :censored:

I've got brain fade as can't think of the thread direction on the cam pulleys. Are they normal or back to front threads? (also same for the crank pulley)?????????????

I started bashing into it with a long wrench but thought I'd better retire for the day and double check as I'm tired and that's when it's too easy to assume and make a mistake. I put quite a lot of pressure on one and it didn't budge so thought it wise to stop. :hypnotized:

Thanks Dave. I thought as much but just had second thoughts last night when I was putting loads of pressure on and it wasn't budging. Little alarm bells rang and thought I'd better double check.
 
Hi Guys.

My engine is on a stand and much lighter now it's stripped of all the loom, plumbing, exhaust, inlet manifold, sump and starter. Also there is a problem as the cam belt has disintegrated and the head's ain't speaking to the spinning bit underneath!!! :eek:)

So when I put a torque wrench on the crank obviously turned and the engine stand free wheeled all over the place with me shouting at it.

Second bout of alarm bells as didn't want to drive a piston into an open valve, or when doing a cam pulley, drive a valve into a tdc piston. There already could be some damage but don't want to add to it.

Hmmmm....

So stuck an old bolt through the ring-gear plate and let it wedge against the block and then gave it merry hell with the torque wrench on the pulley. One rolling engine stand, stars bursting in my eyes and a tweek in my back the bugger came undone. Nice.

Got a couple more questions though....

1.The bottom pulley is pretty wedged on, will any generic puller get it off or is there a specialist tool?
2. How do I wedge the cam pulleys in place to get them undone???
3. Again is there a specialist puller or will any do?

The engine is fine. You didnt damage anything at all. Use a very strong compressor and gun. To take the crank pulley out, you will need a puller.

Any ideas on undoing the cam pulleys without them spinning as it turn so easily?

Once again...... use a pneumatic gun. The torque is so fast, the screw will loosen before the cam have a chance to turn or you can stablize the cam with a crew driver or similar too. I am in the US.....

If you find the cams spinning even with the rattle gun try using a piece of rope wound around the cam drive a few times with a loop on the end of it.

Insert a lenth of timber (or pipe) in the loop to stop the cam turning.

Another option is to remove the cam and mount it in a vice using the hex cast into the cam and undo it that way. The cam lifts out once the bearing caps are removed.
