I'm researching if we can control the A650E 5 speed automatic box with the AEM ECU. Can anyone shine a light on it's operation, especially the operation of the solenoids. It has 4 shift solenoids to control the 5 gears, you should be able to do this with 3 solenoids but the A650E doesn't use up all binary combinations, big deal. The SLU solenoid is for locking up the torque converter.

Then the difficult part, what do the following solenoids do:
SL1
SLT
SL2

I assume they are for controlling various line pressures, but obviously I wonder which line pressures for what. Anyone know?

Hi there Arnout, I have built an a650e into my mk1 cortina, also using an aftermarket TCU.. Have you been able to figure out how the solenoids work?

The info I have on that box is as follows:
gear 1: Solenoid 1
gear 2: solenoid 1 + solenoid 2
gear 3: solenoid 2
gear 4: solenoid 3
gear 5: solenoid 4

But I am not getting second gear using only the above method.. Do you maybe know what the correct way is of getting second gear?

I have found that if I switch s1 and s2 on and then power the lock-up solenoid it kicks to second gear, but does so VERY aggressively. I then got the hard kick softer by applying power to the line pressure and shift control valves...(effectively dropping almost all of the pressure in the box) It works, but i am not sure if this is the right way... have you been able to figure it out in another way?

Regards

We have a supplier which has an aftermarket tiptronic control unit for the 650. Quite a clever bit of equipment and he suggested the shifts where differet to most. Took a little while to sort out. Doubt he will share as he wants to sell them commercially. Cheers

I'm rebuilding one of these boxes for my 340i.

The aim is to strengthening the weak internal parts, replace the valve body, upgrade the TC and run a TCM-2000 full computer to control it.

Shall be awesome I suspect.

We have a customer running a 650 behind a supercharged 1uz putting 240rwkws down with a box in stock form with a tiptronic controler and hasnt broken it yet. What needs upgrading in there? Have another customer with one converted to 4x4 but I haven't wired that one yet so will be interesting to see how it goes. I have to make it work with a stock 1uz ECU (vvti) and a UFC30 3uz. Should be interesting. Will see if it breaks. Cheers

How can I get in contact with the manufacturer of the aftermarket TCU to find out about the pricing and what other mods are needed (eg. power cut facility on motor) and wiring stuff?

I also have the stock ecu (ls400 vvti with a650e) at home, do you think someone might be interested in it? I never tried to get it going on the standard ecu because apparently you need the coded key and ignition to get it working..and the wiring was very difficult to get info on.
If someone can use the ECU..here is the info on the box:

I would love to get a PCM, but the shipping from there to the US would be too much...

I am looking for one to take apart for some other stuff.
