I'm a newbie on this forum. So. If I ask some stupid questions bear with me. Please.

I have a 1991 LS400 that I recently purchased. I bought it for a good price.
The previous owner explained to me that the car idles fine. But. When the gas pedal is depressed. The engine stalls.

I verified that, in fact. That is what happens.
HOWEVER. After the engine stalls. When the car is restarted. The CEL comes on,
along with the TRAC OFF light.

The engine idles fine when restarted. But. It will not rev above 2K rpm, AND, It uses up gas like there is no tomorrow, AND black smoke starts blowing from the tail pipes. I checked the engine codes. The code is 31 meaning the MAF meter. I bought a known good working MAF meter, and, it made no difference.

Could it be the ECU ??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

it sounds like it has something to do with your air intake
perhaps a valve is sticking or dead

black smoke is a key sign that the engine is not getting enough air
its a sign that the fuel is not completely burning

when you press the gas pedal it opens the throttle to let gas in but no air. so it just sputters and dies. its essentially flooding the engine
gas does not burn with out air

however i have no clue as to why the trac off light is on
mine is on as well but i cant figure out why
i dont know enough about the trac control to be able to diagnose it

The trac system may go off of your alt is putting out less power then normal.

and yeah as said above black smoke means an incomplete burn wich is why you're using up so much fuel.
