Hey, im looking to get a tranny cooler for my celsior, im thinking of making it a part time towcar for towing a future project car. I'm unsure of what brand and what size cooler i should get, and i dont know where or how much they cost, anyone help me out with this?

Also would a standard (with trans cooler) 90 celsior be able to tow another car (1000kg+trailer+other ****) without fucking anything up, especially in hilly areas?

Cheers
Chris

Don't bother with stuff you see at wreckers or at auto stores.
Get a proper oil cooler from a proper transmission specialist.
A brand like Serck make some very good coolers in a variety of sizes and fittings. They are available from www.capa.com.au

Whilst it is legal to tow that weight with your car it doesn't make it right. I tow a lot of things and have different cars for the purpose. My Fairlane for instance is rated to tow 2300KGs. My fairlane or any other sedan with this weight (or anything over 800KGs) on it is NOT safe and would be absolutely stupid. I tow the jetskis with it. The 4wd Patrol tows the loaded horse float and the WB 1 Tonner (setup specifically for towing heavy weights) does the horse float or the caravan.

So basicly what your saying is a ls400/celsior is useless for towing cars around 1000kg mark?
Maybe not useless but not safe.
I might end up getting a cooler anyway, just incase i do end up towing with the lex.

just go to any carquest or napa, or car parts suppliers in your country. They have severals trans cooler from small cars to heavy trucks.

and it won't be a lot more expensive than those on ebay.

Since you tow some weight with your car, i'd suggest you to buy one for a small pick-up truck (like a tacoma/Hilux) For about 100$ you,ll have everything included to install it and lenghten your oil hoses.

Don't forget to put the small foams between your engine radiator or A/C radiator and the trans cooler to create an air chamber between those 2.

I dont really know where any good car parts supplers are around here, guess i could try some of the big name stores but i dont expect them to be too cheap, thats mainly why im sticking to ebay. I'll check around on some other websites too.

Thanks for the info about the foam between the cooler/radiator, was going to leave a small gap but some foam would be a better idea.

The size you're looking at is pretty good.

Consider the size of the standard cooler pipe in the radiator plus it's surrounded by hot water.

The size is good the price is good. Just buy it and save running from one auto store to another.

Alrighty, I ended up just getting that cooler from ebay, pretty decent looking cooler, now just a few more questions..

Whats the best config to put it in?
Tranny-Cooler-Radiator-Tranny or Tranny-Radiator-Cooler-Tranny

I'm going to need to build my own brackets for it, so where can i use as mounting points in a Ls400?

When it comes to taking the front bar off are there any any bolt under the headlight or in other places that are a bit of a **** around to get too? I saw a diagram of all the nuts, bolts and clips once but i dont know where to find that again, anyone point me in the right direction?

Thats about all i can think of right now.

Cheers

Most auto trans guys I have spoken to suggest not to route the auto fluid into the radiator but just straight to the cooler and then back to the auto. The apparent therory is that late model efi ect engines run fairly hot, ie arround 90 deg celcius and under normal curcumstances the auto does not run this hot, so the radiator is actually heating up the auto fluid and then the cooler has a harder job to cool the fluid down????
Not sure yet if I believe it, but I connected mine this way. We need to know what temps the auto fluid runs at under normal load and under heavy load ect....

Deleting the radiator section in the cooling loop works well in hot places like Australia.

From what I know about Quebec it gets hot no more than 2 days per year.

I would go trans - cooler - radiator - trans. This will keep the trans oil warm in winter.

Another option is use a thermosat to bypass the cooler when the oil temp is too low. This can also save splitting the cooler in very cold (read Quebec) weather.

The cooler I have came with a thermostat to bypass it when the oil is too cool.

Trans fluid needs to be warm to correctly operate and lube the trans.

Alrighty i've figured out where and how im going to mount it, i'm going to mount infront of the a/c but i dont know how to get the lines down to the radiator, can anyone help me with that, i only had a quick look without taking off the bumper but there doesnt seam to be much space to get the lines down to the back of the radiator.

UZZ-30,

And what was the temperature on Christmas day last year in your front yard.

We don't call 20 or 37 hot. We call 45+ hot.

We have to drive 300 miles to find snow! And that is only there for around 3 months of the year.

you still need to take 10 bucks and travel a little.

Last year on chrismas day, we had no snow in montreal.

Still, don't compare the themperatures. When you have a 85% of humidity, 37 degrees is pretty hot. And your transmission can heat even if it's only 20 degrees.

UZZ-30,

I spent my $10.00. Been to most provinces in Canada. I love winding up Canadians particularly Border/Customs people. My sister lives in Guelph.

My whole point is you live in a colder climate than we do so trans cooling is not so critical. The big danger is overcooling the trans (you can do the same on an engine) where the ambient temps are low. Humidity won't have much impact on the transmissions interpretation of outside temps.
