Usually when you tap the rough surface of a forged crank with a ball been hammer, it gives off a ringing sound, just like a clear bell. A cast crank doesn't have the clear ringing tone.
On Chevrolet cranks, the forged cranks have a thinner parting line (looks like a scar or where one glued/welded the two halves together). The cast crank has a wider parting line. Like 1/16 versus 1/8 of an inch.
I've never looked at a 1UZ crank but imagine you'd observe similar characteristics.
I watched a starter R&R on a LS400 this week. What a PIA to accomplish. You'd think Toyota and Cadillac (Northstar) engineers would find a better location for a starter than in the valley below the intake runners.
