Sideshow was right about using an injector feed to drive the speed sensor signal.
Whilst I've only driven a few k's I've let it wind out to 6,500rpm a couple of times and the CEL hasn't come on so it looks like it's fixed.
Considering I first had the car running in early February it has taken almost 4 months to sort out the leaking caps and then get rid of this fault code.
In that 4 months I've covered around 250klm so it hasn't been totally un-drivable.
To all those who offered advice and assistance, thank you.
Now to get out and drive the wheels off it.
