Im about to drop a stock 1UZ into my S13 hatch and a friend of mine thinks i should stick to a SR20det as it will be much lighter. We are building our cars for grip/touge runs insted of full out drifting, both the 1uz and R154 im putting in my S13 are much bigger, stronger/beefier then the SR20 parts and they are heavier. My car will have to go up against AE86s and CRXs out in the hills. Do you guys think i can still have a kick ass grip car with a 1UZ power plant?

'ken oath! SR20 is iron block yes?

weight distribution will be the same, you'll be down on torque and power over the SR20DET a bit, but it's WHERE you're down on torque and power.

you'll have more torque and power all the way to around 5000rpm where the SR20 will START to catch up - but by then you're in front anyways!

ya its aluminum eh....

SR20 is alum, but its heavier than its cast iron sister the CA18.

Its about 150kg from memory, with the 1UZ at the 175 range.
So 25kg there aint gonna do nothing.

And I doubt you'll be down on power/torque compared to the SR20, unless he runs a ball bearing turbo and a decent amount of boost (while not over sizing the turbo)

If the SR20 makes a shitload more power than the 1uz, then he'll have no low torque at all, and the car will be touge useless.

plus the tranny weight, the R154 is very strong and is HUGE when sitting next to the nissan trans. but if the SR is in the 150KG range then ya, the 1UZ is not much more and would not be much of a factor in total weight. good stuff...

and "touge" is?

Touge is basically mountain driving, racing out in the back roads which are very curvy and require a car with exceptional handling. Its a Japanese thing

Japanese thing my ass...
Just people like calling it "Touge" because it sounds cool.

1UZ in a S13 will work well, just make sure you get the engine as far back and as low as possible.
Move the firewall and make a custom engine xmember & sump if you have to.
The rest can be tuned with suspension.

touge is where drifting started, in the mountains of japan, or so the dvds reckon. pronounced; 'toe-gay'.

Well i guess drifting is a Japanese thing, but quick hills driving (sealed road rallying) certainly isnt.

Isn't Touge more of a race where two cars race each other up a mountain, there is no overtaking, and if the gap between the two is greater at the top, the first car wins, and if the gap is closer, the 2nd car wins?

drifting followed from this, when it was found that is was more fun closing the gap, while being sideways.

Touge (prounounced quite rightly Toe-dew) is a form of uphill and or downhill drift racing, usually in pitch black, on backroads, in hilly country. now usually a tarmac specialist car wouldnt do too well, set the car up for driftin and it'll be 1.5 -2.0 seconds quicker thru corners than a tarmac car...try it on a track first, then out in the backblocks. anyways that sorts that out, now answer the boys question, would a 1UZ be quicker overall than a SR20? even i know its better than an SR20 hence why i want one in my ute....(to the idiot that put an SR20 in his Hilux) ;you my friend are a fool.
