rms, you are correct, you cannot do a fixed RPM on a inertia dyno. That might be useful if you need to fine tune a specific RPM and load, etc, but lots of tuners have found the inertia dyno "good enough". Measuring a engine while as it is accelerating is not that bad of a scenario, as that's what they tend to do in real life anyway :)
 
Thats not correct turboandrew. To correctly tune and engine you need to keep the engine at a fixed rpm/load for a period of time usually 20-30seconds. This gives the engine time to stabilize so that transient conditions ie accelerating air mass etc aren't effecting your measurements. Hence why inertia dynos aren't very practical for tuning. There only saving grace is that you are no longer on the road trying to tune endangering yourself/others.
