I think the water pump you are thinking of is actually the hydraulic fan pump and the solanoid sticks out quite far. you can just take this off but it exposes your cambelt. I kept the housing off my pump but machined it back so i can fit and electric pull fan...I will post a pic or a link...see...

I have done some looking around and think it could only be off a T or G series motor with that orientation...

has anyone pulled one of these hydraulic fans appart??? I dont need mine so im gutting it and removing the wheel, problem is now i have the nut off the wheel the wheel still wont budge. Am i going to need a puller or is there some other trick??

I saw rod millans IS300 on t.v. and think this would make an excellent project. There are a bunch of IS300(toyota altezza's) in new zealand and there is bound to be some out there missing engines and in need of a 1UZ transplant. So id be very interested to see how you get on IS300.

Yeah go the tripple plate for the hard launches, Most of the drag guys here are still using W55 boxes with the tripple plate set up and seem to be doing ok. Does anyone know if there are 2 different auto bellhousings on the back of the 1UZ's, my soarer bellhousing appears to not be tilted...

Im using the W58 in my 2WD Hilux but just using a heavy duty 3SG-te(GT4) clutch and pressure plates. I do know of a few guys dragging 1UZ's that are opting for the tripple plate clutch as they say they can then dump it in 3rd gear etc. with out them slipping.
