1UZ-FE Transplant into 91 Hilux Surf

Hi Muzz, I've got about 10mm clearance between the bonnet & the radiator cap and about 50mm between the bottom of the radiator & the chassis. I needed about 30mm below the radiator for the lower radiator mounts which left me with 20mm clearance between the mounts & chassis, so there's not a...

1UZ-FE Transplant into 91 Hilux Surf

Hi Clown Boy, I had the rear drive shaft lengthened by 32mm and the front one shortened by the same amount. (The gearbox/transfer case was shifted foward 32mm from the factory position to get enough clearance between the engine & firewall). I may have been able to keep the rear driveshaft at...

The standard radiator seems pretty small. I know a few people have used them and they seem to work ok... But what if you're doing a lot of towing, or driving on sand on a hot day and running the airconditioning at the same time. I would imagine it would soon run out of cooling capacity pretty...

I think it's about 65 litres. It looks identicle to the diesel fuel tank apart from the removable panel on the top which is there to get access to the internal fuel pump.

Hi Matt, I used a fuel tank from a V6 surf which has an internal pump and it seems to be working fine. I also know of other conversions using the same setup and they haven't had any problems with theirs either. It's probably the easiest and cheapest option because it bolts straight in without...

Well... I'm back in business. I finally got myself a new computer that goes. I'll post some pics of the radiator installation when I get a chance. Just need to figure out how this new machine works.

Good luck. I hope everything goes to plan. Just be prepared for it to take about 3 times longer than you think!!!

About $320 (NZ Dollars) So it ain't cheap to do. I figured they took so long to build, I wanted to make them last as long as possible so I had them HPC coated. Besides that... It makes them stand out as well.

Na, I went up to Jono's on Wednesday after work to get some new sparkplugs. I don't think it will make the ECU codes go away but it may help it run a bit better though. I think the plugs that are in it now a probably the original plugs and are way overdue for a change. While I was there, he...

They're 39" long (equal length). I read in a performance book for a small block chev that the ideal length for primaries should be between 38 - 42" long for a street car. Usually the rule is... The longer the primaries, the more torque you get (within reason) and power comes on lower down in...

It's fully legal and is an absolute pleasure to drive. Still have a few minor problems to fix though. It doesn't idle too well and seems to be underpowered. Im getting codes 82, 83 & 84 from the ECU and have no idea what they mean. I have a mate with the same ECU (from an 89 Crown) so I'll...

Thanks for the complement! I bought the manderal exhaust bends from a company called Woolf Mufflers who supply exhaust components. They also had exhaust flanges but they were only 6mm thick with 2 bolt connections and I wanted 10mm thick with 3 bolt connections. Johnno at Performance...

And some more pics.... Im pretty sure you can figure out where this is!!! I was trying to keep the exhaust up as high as possible and also have enough clearance around the spare tyre. The surface rust on the diff is from sitting in long grass for a couple of years.

Here's some more pics showing the exhaust bolted in place. This is the left side looking toward the back where the exhaust bolts up to the headers. This is the right hand side over the front drive shaft & transfer case where the exhaust bolts up to the headers. This is the right hand...

Now that the headers are finally finished and bolted in place, it was time to finish the rest of the exhaust. It's always a gamble figuring out what configuration & mufflers to use to get the right sound if you haven't done it before. I didn't want it too noisy where it would attract cops, or...

Here's another shot of the 8mm clearance between the headers and the diff mount on the left side but this time, looking from the back toward the front. And here's a close-up of the clearance around the suspension & steering rod on the right hand side. The left hand side is almost identical.

This is looking from the front right hand side where the least amount of clearance between the primaries & diff mount is. It has about 8mm clearance here. Here's some more pics of the clearance around the bellhousing & transmission looking from underneath.

Hopefully there's enough clearance around everything. The least amount of clearance is only about 8mm which is between the diff mount on the right hand side of the chassis and the lowest part of the headers. When the engine is under load, it will pull on the left hand mount and increase this...

I was really tight getting the headers in, even with the body lifted up and out of the way. I put rags around the chassis and managed to get them in managed without scratching them. Here they are bolted up in there final position with the body bolted back onto the chassis.

Header Flange Drawings available for download!

Mine were water-cut from 10mm plate steel (3/8"). Watercutting gives a very neat & tidy finish and is probably as accurate to the drawing as you can get. But the vertical cut through the steel is on a very slight taper. For example: An 11mm diameter hole will be 11mm diameter on one side of...
