Hmmm. I did not mean to imply that I recomputed HP because of (or based on) more dyno resistance, although there is a relationship. It would seem that a 900hp engine on "not enough" dyno resistance would show more HP when there was more resistance. Of course a 400hp motor might not show the...

Yes, that is the risk: max power strength. I have reflected on my dyno experience in the light of some new information: The dyno guy had the resistance of the rollers still set to the 1000hp turbo LS1 Firebird from the week before, and, the wiring guy made some mistakes, one of which, I now...

Plan B/2 Plan B/2: Since it is going to take some time to get all the pieces together for my race-prepped 2UZ short block (rods and pistons and boring/honing), I have decided to put my racer back together with another standard 1UZ bottom end I already have so I can go racing. Everybody who has...

The plan Thanks again for all of your time and interest. I really appreciate it. There appears to be quite a variance in opinion, and experience, as to the strength, and horsepower limits, of the standard (large rod) 1UZ bottom end. Some compliment their own good tuning for the reliability...

There sure is a lot of different thinking out there about these 1UZs. I just broke a standard 'big' rod on the dyno, so I bought some forged steel rods, but I am still toying with building a 2UZ short block down the road and I do not necessarily want to buy forged pistons for the 1UZ now...

Believe it or not, I found a set of new Lextreme forged steel rods here in Bangkok . . . and bought them. I also procured a nice 1UZ short block. The question is: Do I order forged pistons or not, at this stage? Standard pistons OK to 400hp? With 50hp shot of NOS, only 5-7 pounds of boost...

Thanks for all the thoughtful replies. I appreciate everyone's time and interest. We made one good pull with the NOS to 6500rpm without mishap and got data. It broke on the second pull at around 4500rpm. Well, I hate to say it, but we were taking the O2 readings off the other bank at the time...

This is what the broken rod looks like: The bottom of the piston is also broken. Hmmmmm . . . what happened?

Yes, -5 at the NOS hit (40hp). The rod hit the block and cracked it through to the water passage. One valve bent. The head "looks" good, but will be examined more closely. The list of who or what caused the broken rod is getting longer, but keep them coming. I am already negotiating on a 2UZ and...

Spurious (miscalibrated and uncorrected) dyno numbers + bad luck.

Yes, factory early "big" rods -- unopened low mileage bottom end . . . . taken to 7000 rpm with only "315" rwhp on a 40hp shot of NOS . . . seems like they could have done better.

Oops! Indeed! OOPS! Indeed  During the last dyno pull the engine would not rev to 5000 and there were strange noises. Upon returning to the shop the number 7 cylinder was found to have zero compression. Removing the head revealed the number 7 piston could be pushed down with one...

Yes, yes, and yes. I have talked to the dyno operator and he says this is "delivered torque" . . . . without corrections. I do not know why he used this particular method. I sent him an e-mail for more info. There is NO WAY this motor made 955 ft. lbs. of torque w/o NOS. There is a...

Dyno Day, Part Two. Got to 7000rpm. 955 ft.lbs. (delivered) at 5500. Haven't done the math for the HP yet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BD2fECB_wc http://drjeffbangkok.squarespace.com/racing-projects-blog/

Thanks Fasteddie and JustenGT8. I will find out tomorrow morning (knock on wood) what I have. I wouldn't mind a fat torque curve below 5000 . . . . good for drag racing. I am angling for one of those Kiwi single plane high rise single 4bbl intake manifolds . . . convert it to EFI . . . single...

I was just wondering . . . there is a lot of talk on this site about the standard lower manifold runners restricting airflow above 5000rpm . . . . and thought these might flow more, even in a boosted configuration. It looks like a couple of members purchased this set-up, but no accounts of...
