I have Echo shims in mine with 2J over size valves .. Them from memory is 2mm longer and make up for thinner buckets . It has Kelford custom turbo cams .. It was recommended by them to fit shimless buckets.. As my rpm range is expected to be 8500 plus.. Drag engine .. Been on hold for a while...

I would use stone honer to the specs of new rings..

If the compressor is on the small side.. Injecting pre turbo helps in compressors efficiency.. But must be high pressure with proper jets.. Just be aware water doesn't compress...

How much is another engine ? A latter vvt built engine with 'forged' rods and pistons would be a killer .. Or non vvt with forged assembly and use some parts as spares ??

It's more of an issue when re ground cams have too small base circle where the nose of the cam is on outside of shim and not in contact on centre .. There's way better valve springs around now which takes out the pioneering ..

My old mate up in Queensland and I have debated the effort to convert to shimless etc.. Decent valve springs, to control things helps big time.. Ground cams may have more issues being smaller base circle.. These guys make a good spring . http://www.performancesprings.com.au/

Does the latter model have deeper dish in piston ? Tune and or lowering compression will help . Gives wider safe tune area. Detonation kills std rotating parts..

Depends on price ? Not sure if many of these will be written off locally to have enough to keep prices down or imported like the 1UZ.

You said looking for clues what went wrong ?? IMO too much consistent high rpm .. Larger baffled sump . Oil cooler .. And a mirror !!

You WILL make more power with one big single though.. Ceramic coat pipes leaves one hot area..
