Help with Head and Deck Height Measurements?

ngdave, thanks for your additional data. It'll be interesting to see how well your timing belt fits now, and what you come up with for valve timing. Did your machinist give you any numbers on how much metal he took off on the deck & head surfaces?

    Naturally aspirated 1UZFE?

Thanks James, yes, the 1UZ is a gem of an engine, which is why it has such a loyal following, albeit not as large a following as the SBC or SBF. I've had its castings sitting next to my Ferrari's castings, and the quality of the 1UZ's is far superior to the Ferrari - same with the machined...

    Naturally aspirated 1UZFE?

James, welcome to Lextreme; good to have you here and when you get some time, it would be interesting to know more about your shop and what you've done with the other 1UZ's you've built. For the carb manifolds I'm sure our member Gloverman can shed some light on these - if he doesn't notice...

    supercharger help

Kenne Bell are one of the better known names for screw compressor packages. In the past they've used Opcon Autorotor's equipment. As American Locomotive suggested, you should consider intercooling if you plan on boosting at the 10-15 psi level. Many of these companies like Bullet and Kenne Bell...

    supercharger help

Screw compressors historically are the most efficient, but Eaton have taken the Roots concept a long way and they're almost as good as a screw, and they're cheaper too.

    1UZ in Thai longtail boat

You can check for non-firing cylinders by putting an inductive timing light on each HT wire and seeing if it "fires" regularly. For non-firing injectors, there are devices called "noids" that clip between the injector and its electrical connection and they'll indicate firing pulses. If they...

    1UZ in Thai longtail boat

Did you reuse your old gasket when you changed your RH head? Sometimes you can get away with doing that if it's a MHG, but the OEM composition style really needs changing. Also, you may have condensation boiling out of your exhaust as the engine warms up and it may look like white smoke? I'm...

    1UZ in Thai longtail boat

Melvin, If the problem you're describing tends to heal itself as the engine heats up, I would suspect a leaking head gasket. There are some cheap test kits that you can use to "sniff" the fumes in your coolant overflow tank for exhaust gas, indicating a leaking or a blown head gasket. Search...

    Eaton TVS2300 for 1UZ, 2UZ, 3UZ

Nice work, but I'm not understanding a few things, and it might be in the language translation: 1. Are you building an "adapter"? This implies you're using some of the old manifold pieces, and combing them with your new pieces. 2. Or are you building a complete, new manifold out of billet...

    1UZ in Thai longtail boat

I think you'll find that because of the intake manifold design, the AFR's will vary between cylinders and this will cause variations in the EGT's. So if you want to monitor EGT's, I'd probably do it from a bank to bank perspective, and not individual cylinders. I do have a friend who's building...

    1UZ in Thai longtail boat

Don't scrimp on the size. Ferrari uses the copper braid between heads & block, and theirs looks to be about AWG 2 or larger. There are at least 3-4 separate large grounds on their engines - one thing their electrical engineers apparently got right. The rest of the electrical system on a Ferrari...

    1UZ in Thai longtail boat

Melvin, this is true, IMHO. Even though the heads "should" be electrically connected to the block by way of all the head studs & nuts, nothing beats a nice chunk of copper braid between them.

    Nitrous? How much giggle juice?

You've got the better, thicker rods in your motor so you should be OK with a 100 shot. Any higher and you're playing with fire. If you blow it up, stay with the early engines before '96. Lexus "upgraded" to thinner rods then.

    1UZ in Thai longtail boat

Melvin, when these engines start having internal issues, it may be easier/cheaper to get another engine. They're fantastically built and reliable, but they're also so cheap at junkyards that it's really not worthwhile to go into them and fix internal problems, unless you're just doing it for the...

I think this was David's last big project, and I don't think it worked out for him. IIRC, there were sealing issues with the liners, but maybe someone else with a better memory can chime in and give more info.
