Building a LS400 race car... informed opinions needed...

Just thought I'd do a quick update... I keep tweaking the car, but we are typically one of the fastest cars at every race. Fuel consumption kills us, but its worth it to go so fast :) I'd like to swap a 98-00 driveline in to improve economy. I can get them cheap locally - how hard is it to do...

    1990 LS400 Brake upgrade

Update.. Works sweet 17hrs of flat out racing and no wear.

    Macpherson struts up front

Seems like a terrible idea frankly. The design is very good. Just make some adjustable arms if you need more camber, or move the arm pivots and use the stock adjusters....

    LS400 suspension

$35USD for a coilover kit off ebay and 4 junkyard shocks for $65 and I replaced my air suspension with coilovers... We run VERY strong on this setup. Handles great.

    A650E Transmission fluid

I got some kind of cooler (oil cooler I think) from a late model Celica at the junkyard for $10, that is about 4x that size.... really hard to tell level with fresh fluid though! I hate auto's too, but now that I've got 40hrs of race time on this one, I only hate it a little... Still prefer...

    A650E Transmission fluid

I don't "Know", so take with a grain of salt, but I just use Mobil 1 and race the shit out of my car. I change it when it looks grubby. I started racing with nearly 250k Miles on it, and no problems so far....... PS, why would you bother manually shifting it? Shouldn't have any impact to change...

    is it possible? - 97-2000 engine&trans to 91?

Got a 91 LS, and wonder if its feasable to either 1. Swap the later model 5 speed in my 91LS, using the later trans ecu, and somehow mate to the 91 harness? 2. If #1 isn't practical, can I swap in the complete engine, trans and engine/trans harness from a 97-2000 into my 91 and still use the...

    Ditch my cluster?

Hi, I want to ditch the cluster and just have oil pressure, water temp, volts and maybe oil temp.... are there any cheap aftermarket gauges that work with the stock senders? thnx

    0W20 in a 1UZ-FE?

Thanks for the links... For everybody, there is no "one size fits all". Most people are talking street cars, but street and competition uses are completely different, and with different goals. Your use case really has to determine which of the many answers is right for you. For any real racer...

    0W20 in a 1UZ-FE?

I've run a variety of synthetics and I'm racing at redline, up to 24hrs straight on a car showing 250k on the clock. 0-30 and 0-40, as well as 5-30 all seem to work fine. I see some oil consumption, but haven't pinned it down to which oil I got it with. Some times it burns some, some times it...

    Job? What do you do?

Business Architect "for a Major Auto Company" - Not sure I'm allowed to say, but it does has something to do with the brand here ;) Also used to be a fabricator, machinist and other stuff. I do Solidworks/MasterCam too and have a small CNC machine shop for making my toys :)

    1990 LS400 Brake upgrade

First parts off the CNC machine... After much research, will do drilled and slotted too, and then test them under the hardest conditions I can - 15-24 hr endurance race... At the last race, I used up race pads and even ate through the rear backing pads, so its quite a test.

What you can do to your car without ANY HELP

    1. Engine: Overhaul & rebuild complete engine, plus all maintenance tasks. Design, fabricate and install custom components outside of longblock, Fabricate headers/exhaust etc. 2. Transmission: Replace a whole transmission, but not rebuild (not so far anyway) 3. ECU/EMS: N/A (Will probably dive...

LSD swap for the SC400 ???

Can't see how to do a manual within legal budget... It might be possible, but I don't know how, hence my sticking with the automatic. I'll be able to get that going sooner or later within $ limits... If you don't want to weld up the rear, soften your rear springs a LOT. Most people run simply...

LSD swap for the SC400 ???

Yeah, RA needs the 3.6 gear prolly. My fuel consumption is bad... 9-10 gph or so. I searched a long time for an LSD and just got really lucky. Get a spare diff and weld up the spiders? I ran a welded rear before. Worked on track, but a pita in the pits. I'm running 800lb front and rear $30 eBay...

LSD swap for the SC400 ???

Greg, I don't have all the facts, but when I researched the old supra LSD's it wasn't a match for the LS - not in the case, or in the internals. if you want more gear, the R&P from the 6cyl A/T sc is a 4.27 and is what I'm running.. In fact, using the whole SC diff, and modded my subframe to...

    1990 LS400 Brake upgrade

I'm pushing these harder than any street car or even a sprint race car could possibly do with races lasting up to 24 hours of full out racing on one set of rotors. Just my brake pads cost over $250 per axle, and don't last past one event. The wave external profile puts more surface area in the...

    1990 LS400 Brake upgrade

After much research, Here's my "ultimate" brake rotor. I'll custom CNC machine these, and use them at my next endurance race in October. Will be a bit spendy, but absolutely nobody will have them.... Anybody interested in a group buy? I should have them made and on the car within a couple weeks.
