the clockspring is the name for the device that passes electrical signals from the harness to the steering wheel, invlucing the fxn/reset/info button or the dash, the airbag, and (in the GS) the shifter buttons.

older engines aren't "VVT" at all. there's no variable valve timing on any lexus/toyota V8 before '98, with the VVT-i 1UZ engine.

if you REALLY want a paddle shifter, or at least buttons, you could probably swap to a GS400 ecu, harness, and steering wheel, as those were e-shift. The ecu and wiring provisions for the e-shift don't exist in the LS ecu though. You would probably need the GS clock spring too.

engine immobilizers were added in '97, so double check if you have a late '96 car. otherwise the system added could possibly be aftermarket. if it's oem, any junkyard in the US could sell you the coil/amp you need.

if there's no immobilizer ecu (on vvti 1uz its integrated with the ECU iirc) then what's the need for bypassing it? the LS is a japanese car?

you possibly use the type of DEI Bypass (the adaptive/predictive kind) used in remote starters for 98+ ls/gs/sc cars and wire it up to run all the time.

so this is a vvt-i 1uz with completely stock intake/exhaust, just cams and unichip? interesting.. these are the stage 2: 274 duration 385 lift cams right?

you can get away cheaper than that, i bought the Scantool.net ElmScan 5 ScanXL (cable, controller, and upgraded software) and it's been working GREAT. you don't really need the ScanXL, i got it because i got the whole shebang for ~$140...

the calipers you want (1995-2000) look like this :) 1st gen LS calipers look completely different. (sliding single piston vs. opposed 4piston)
