I have read a few post's on here that seem to have the same kinda issue that I have... but with the exception that mine WILL eventually start and run A O K... So for fear of highjacking their theads... here is mine.

The other day i was driving down the freeway (after already doing about 150 km) and the engine just went dead... no chugging... no surging... didnt even notice as i was coasting and went to put the put down then noticed the red lights on the dash... all other electrics were fine with the exception of the tacho... even though i was still doin 110 (kph) in gear with the motor off the tacho was dead. and now that i think about this time the speedo hit 0 as well ( but the other time this happened while i was moving it didnt)

Cool... pulled over and popped the bonnet... mainly to try and impress the missus... (and totally at a loss)... whipped out a few fuses here and there and put em back in and after about 15 minutes... presto.. she started.

No drama's... went shoppin... came out ready to go... turned it over and nothin... turns over no problem and goes to fire... but while all this is happening the tacho sits still. Now... with the SAME missus in the car i pulled out the efi relay and replaced it with a spare that i had "just laying around".

Bang... beautiful... she fired... off we go... Im gonna get a bit when i get home says the look in her eye's... my hero.

THEN... sitting at what is arguably the busiest intersection on the Gold Coast... GONEEEEE. Nuthin... Nadddda.

Now I can see the only hot and sweaty im gonna be getting is pushin this hunk o shit thru this intersection, across about 8 lanes of traffic and about 100meters to the clearway... YAYYYYY.

And then it starts... after about 20 cracks at it and without opening the bonnet. every time it sounded as if it is gonna start and every time it dont the tacho sits still... then for for no other reason then small mercies the tacho jumps and the engine starts.

Well anyways... now its sitting in the shop and the guys are tellin me that they cant find anything wrong... and are now waiting for a 'specialist' to take a look.

ANYONE.... ANY idea's...

defiantly sounds electrical,

Check your relays, if you've got a relay that get a little hot then gives it up that might be the issue.

Check engine codes, might tell you something.

It could be the wire running to the tacho, if the computer thinks the engines not turning over then it will not give it fuel.

Or the engine speed sensor at the bottom of the harmonic balancer, check the resistance is the correct rating, and that the wires are well shielded.

Just to update...

When i took the bloody thing in i happened to say 'no rush'... 4 weeks to the day i get it back

Because of the intermittant nature it WAS a bit hard to track down. First thought was the crank sensor... nope

Then the EMC. Sent it off and found a leaking capacitor (supposedly)... NOPE

Narrowed it down to a coil... replaced it and everything seems to be ok now

fingers crossed anyways

i once had a similar issue in a nissan skyline that had a after market tacho wired in.... over time the feed wire from the coil to the tacho wore through where it was running through the fire wall and was arcing out... needless to say it had me scratching my head as is yours....
