I am just curious on how hard it is to learn how to paint. My carport can be seal up and spray. Have anyone ever try to DIY? Qaulity will come with practice but I am just curious.

long long long time spent prepping

the spraying itself is easy if you have a clue

95% of the quality of the outcome comes from prep. that simply put is: time, patience, high quality bog and primer, and hard hard work

Well Lex, it's very easy to paint if that is what you are asking -A roller, or brush and paint, maybe even a spray gun as it is not that complicated...(just kidding with ya) The surface preperation is the key...Clean and grease free with driveways and or carports is very important...Using a floor epoxy paint is your best bet for car ports... A couple of coats if your rolling and parking a car on it.. Again, make sure the surface is de-greased and clean and you are good.. If the surface is not clean when painted it will chip or peal within a few months...

I would use a thick roller to paint a concrete floor also... Forget about a sprayer with Epoxy paint, not a great idea...Roll with epoxy...

David, I used to paint our racing kart frames many years ago, and as Ed said, the preparation is the key. The surface has to be rough enough to hold the paint, but not so rough as to produce a "rough" effect in the paint. Once you spray, it's soooo easy to get runs, rooster tails, orange peel, etc. There are so many potential problems with painting that I wouldn't consider doing it now on anything I value.

Maybe practice on an old heap first?

Jake, I can always count on you to set me straight....Sorry, I thought Lex was talking about painting a carport...Oooops, my bad...

Dude, I wouldn't try to paint my car in a million years... You need prep work big time which means no dings or dents, etc...,multiple coats, clear coat finish, color sanding, etc.. Then you would need to pray for no orange peal or drips afterwards....However, I would maybe venture to grab a can of black primer spary paint from Pepboys and try that on an old 4x4.., Try for that old Madmax brutal primer look....That's about as far as my car painting skills would take me...

Good luck Lex, if you can pull that off and have it look good when it is finished, then bro my hats off to you and you da man!!!

it's not all that hard to paint a car prep prep prep and have lots of beer because you will get so sick of fucking sanding ......... if i can do it anyone can here is a pic of my old vl commy and it was done with cheap **** paint

Hi guys, as some of you know I did all the work on my own beasty. It was my first paint job that started as a small rust repair and ended as a bare metal respray. When it comes to painting you must have a clean place to do the job, time (3 times more than you bargain for) and lots of patience. The one thing I tell anyone who wants to do their own paint is that for the price you'd pay someone els to do it you may as well have a go, if you stuff up you can always try again. Once you have some ability, scratches and dents don't seem that bad coz you can then fix it yourself.

ED, I admire your continued sarcism...It definetely shows your true character... You go buddy and keep painting those old heaps over and over again as they almost look worth keeping...:laughing
Boys,

Keep this battle via PM.

Another tip is to make sure the sprayer is moving at a constant rate. Too slow and you'll have runs motling (metallics and pearls) and drip build up. Too fast and you'll have uneven shades. Prep is key and make sure you're in a place where you can keep dust and wind to a minimum..

I was going to suggest David get some practice on Jibby's SC400 as J Cribb suggested he practice on a heap first!

Zuffen, I would welcome David to paint my "old Sc400 heap" as you suggest...However, it really doesn't need paint (well maybe a bit of touch up on the front end) However, It needs alot of other stuff other then paint.. You know Rod, I am really flattered that you would be thinking of my cars needs as I really didn't no you cared..

Trying to stay cool but this heat out of "no where" is starting to get to me.. Summer must be approaching..:moon:
