Has anyone had issies with harmonic ballancer breaking the key on 1UZ crank???
They look very suspect on modified engine...
I will be machining a longer grove in crank snout with longer key...
I know some "modiified" 2J GTE's stripping keyway...
It from memory the key retains timing gear and ballancer...
The ballancer is the least of problems, but the timing gear is a worry!!!!

I think it is more a matter of the retaining bolt not being torqued up.
People have suggested 'just hit it with a rattle gun' or 'hit the spanner with a hammer'.
Torque to 245 Nm.
Toyota don't specify that amount of torque just to stop it coming undone !

On a 600 h.p pluss drag engine, Where it revs hard to 8,000rpm real quick
I don't like the idea of my expensive billet Kelford cams being mangled...
A few guys that race and build these engines say its another mod they do while engine is being race prepared...

Camshafts will be the least of your worries if you shear the timing gear key!

We do not run a harmonic balancer, toothed belt drive to alternator and dry sump pump, belt tensioner is locked solid. So far so good after 3 hours running to 9200 rpm.

Yea not wrong about valve gear!!
Comparing the keyway to other motors the key looks a little short...
Especially in drag racing where there's a some decent shock loading, one I know has had issues was on supercharged boat motor. But again there's heaps more load in that area with s/c....
In all cases yes bolt may not have been torqued correctly...
Its just an area that needs checking, as with any modded engine...
It's not a design fault, its just the extreme power we put through them...

The sheer stength of a 6" nail is 5 tonnes.

A 6' nail is around 5mm in diameter.

Think of the sheer strength of a solid piece of steel the size of the woodruff key.

I won't be using a nail.. Its modded with longer key now..
The issue maybe when not torqued correctly or the interferance on crank is lost due to being taken on & off too often..
The cranks etc get hard time with transbrake, launch control etc....
Normal road use won't be an issue...

On supercharged dinosaur v8s it is common to machine a second key way for a 1/4" key 180' from the original. You can buy blower harmonic balancers with the key way already machined in it.

This is exactly what I did for my blown big block Ford setup.

have fun

Simon
