Hi all,

Due to space constraints in my 1UZ build, I need to fit a K&N, ITG or Pipercross type air filter. I have an 80mm inlet OD to connect a filter to, there seem to be quite a few with that size ID available.

Has anyone got any recommendations or suggestions as to what is a good choice for the 1UZ?

Thanks, Mat.

Yo howzit man, put that death mushroom on it, that'll do, she'll be fine! No more stones and small birds in your engine. Does little to stop dust though. And sucks hot air.

I'm with George on this.

They flow more air because they have big pores in them that will let grains of sand into the engine.

I do run a pod and know I'm shortening the engines life, but I'm too idle to either fix it or get a foam sock to improve it's filtration.

At least mime sits in an alloy box fed cold air from outside the engine bay.

If you look around you can find filter assemblies that are not much larger than a pod. Check out late model EFI Range Rover Classics.

thanks for the replies, I am aware of the pros and cons of the pod vs airbox and stoc paper filter. If I had room for the airbox I would fit it, I have it in the garage. But my car is low on space in the engine bay.

I am not advocating the use of a pod filter, just saying I need to fit one, does anyone have recommendations from experience with the 1UZ

Zuffen - this Range Rover compact airbox, I'd be interested in that - is it the stock item or aftermarket? I've seen aftermarked small airboxes, but they run the same filter as a pod, just in an enclosure.

do you have any links to the part you mean?

Thanks, Mat

Thanks Zuffen, that's a good point about the oil. That looks like a rover vitesse air filter housing, I'll have a look at one and see if I can get it to fit.

Cheers, Mat.

Mat,

This thread has prompted me to have a look at mine.

Donaldson have a Site where you can check filters by size.

I'm going to use a http://donaldsontoolbox.com.au/search/partdetail/view/P535360-P535360-KUBOTA-1730111080 as it will fit in my airbox and pass over the inlet pipe (100mm). To block the other end I'll use a 130mm plate that is held against the filter by a bolt through the airbox. This will make the air flow in from the sides rather than straight up the middle with no filtration.

I should have done this 6 years ago!

This is the entry to the whole Site. http://donaldsontoolbox.com.au/search/filterdimensions

Mat, subaru legacy filter may be ok for you too
I initially used it to address the space restrictions
Tha maf tube on the picture is s custom made unit, it's not a part of the air box

George, that airbox looks good. Nice to have a proper airbox! I would like to fit something like that if I could.

i'll let you know what I end up with. Thanks for the replies.

Cheers, Mat.

Hi,

I've bought the rover vitesse one - found one cheap on evilbay.

I’ve got a technical question…..

The outlet to the engine is at the bottom of the drum (see photo, the rusty metal part seals the filter so air goes around the filter inside the drum, through the filter element which is a cylinder shape, and to the engine inlet through the middle of the filter.

The smaller part is the air inlet to the filter assembly, it clips onto the drum, letting air into the filter housing. My question is about the funnel part on the inlet piece. Do I need this? It looks like it will restrict the airflow by virtue of it’s small size and converging shape.

Could I cut off the funnel bit? It would help with fitment. And could I enlarge the hole to decrease the restriction to air entering the filter? The rover vitesse is a 3.5 or 3.9 v8 with about 220 bhp, so presumably is in the ball park for airflow.

You aren't going to gain or lose any noticeable horsepower here whatever you do to the air intake bit. Only make sure it's sucking cold air

The bellmouth at the end of the inlet tube will actually increase airflow into the filter, but the tube does look a little small.

If you left the end off the canister it would still work and have no restrictions.

Having the end fitted will keep the filter dry, act as a flame trap and reduce intake noise.
