For my headers i cut off the original pipe off the header flanges and welded in a 2.5 inch piece of exhaust tube. it seems to improve the flow and is really a cheap way of doing it

to help a flickering tig keep your tungsten electrodes ground sharp and grind towards the point to make the arc run straight

i would probaly use 316 stainless rod in a tig then you shouldnt have any problems with cracking if you can get hold of pickling paste which is an acid it will clean the weld up and stop corrosion
