One thing almost never discussed specifically on this forum: exhaust tone. Everyone talks about power numbers but half the reason people build these motors is the sound.
I'll start the conversation with what I know.
Stock 1UZ with cats removed and a 2.5 inch single exit: deep, muffled, almost too quiet. Sounds like a luxury car trying not to be noticed, which is fine if that's what you want.
Go to 3 inch dual exit with a mid-muffler delete: completely different car. The V8 burble comes through properly, sounds genuinely aggressive at high RPM without being obnoxious at idle.
Headers make the biggest tonal difference. The stock manifolds choke the sound as much as they choke the power. Shorty headers open up the mid-range note significantly even before you touch the rest of the system.
What's everyone running and what does it actually sound like? Pipe diameter, muffler setup, cats or no cats, and a description of the tone -- or a video link if you have one. Would be useful to build a reference here since it's almost impossible to find sound comparisons for these motors online.
