I wanted to know if it is bad for the engine to start it up and drive without warming the engine up? I have a '94 LS400 with 90k mls, and I heard somewhere that if you warm up the car to below 1k rpms before you put it into gear that it will give the engine added life and performance. Is there any truth to this and is there an advantage to 'warming up the engine' to below 1k rpm?

You should warm up the engine before driving is always a good thing. Warming up the engine will help your motor oil to lube parts.

in newer engines that don't have as many 'drainaway' issues as older engines, you really only need about 30secs or so of idling before you can drive away.

however, keeping the engine under 3000 and off load until it is warmed up will prolong it's life as much as sitting there, idling, for 5 mins before you drive it.

combine this with frequent oil and filter changes and the longevity of the most understressed engine in the world will see you easily into the 500thou mark.
