SC400 won't start ..

My 93 SC400 was running normally and has a new battery, alternator and ignition( plugs, wires, coil packs) out of the blue one morning it makes this God awful wirring sound followed by the sound of spinning rollers (the only way to really describe the sound when turning the key). It will not start it will not even rapidly click as if it needed a jump. It just makes this terrible noise like nothing I've never seen before. There's power and I can crank as many times and it sounds like something struggling to engage. My guess is the starter. I checked the relay while somebody turned the key and it makes a click..that's as far as I've gone on the starter idea. Any advice would be much appreciated

The contacts in the starter relay can and do fail. The erode due to the spark when the starter is engaged.

Sounds like starter out and pull it down for a rebuild.
