I'm wanting to do a1uz swap like all the awesome people here. My issue is I'm trying
To locate my parts. I've found a R154 from a 89 supra. Can it be converted to a 4wd for 1989 4runner or would it be better to just find one from a truck? Please help.

Well come to find out researching a lil further r154 does not com 4wd. I would need a r151f from a 6 cyl Taco or 4Runner. If I can't find a r151f I think I'm going to run the sc400 auto the comes with the car.

The w56 that's in my truck, is there any strength in there to survive the 1uz?

If it's the w56 with the steel sandwich plate it should hold up to the 1uz just fine at stock power levels. Otherwise I would go with the post 96' R151F as it is 4wd and has the correct shaft length to be adapted to the 1uz.

Would that make a diff on what adapters I use.. What would be the cheaper route to go?

#1. Custom r151f bellhousing to trans adapter

#2 auto trans bell housing with adapter plate

Guess I shouldn't say cheaper but the better route you prefer?

better off with option #2 less time money and expense.
and it's tranny #3,which while common, it probably will probably run 3-900$ from a junk yard.
