How does brake pad wear sensor work?

I'm wondering how the brake pad wear sensor works on a 94 LS400. Does it use a Hall Effect sensor? Does the pad wear sensor light latch or is it reset automatically when the pads are replaced and the sensor is further from the rotor?

It's just a wire going through the sensor. Once you break the wire,the warning light turns on.
