I've seen you posts on pirate, how's the power output of the 1uz in your crawler? Any worries about the fj80 front axles or birfs? Are you running stock 80 axles and birfs, or longfields?

I've been considering building a go fast truck based off of Toyota mini-truck. Looks like it could even be ultra 4 mod class legal now. Pretty much the same drivetrain, although I'd go automatic and not sure I'd use the dual cases. Use the 1uz with 80 axles, coilovers all the way around and 37s, tube chassis with Toyota skins. I'm just not sure the 1uz would have enough power or that the 80 axles would hold up.

Its hard to argue against an LS series motor.

I'm not much of a 4x4 guy but I've had them in the past plus I have uz vehicles ans ls1 based vehicles that I drive almost daily so I'll take a shot at answering your question.

With a second gen 1uz on a aftermarket engine management system we pulled in the neighborhood of 280 hp and 310 tq, on the ls1 last week I got 320 hp and 350 tq. considering the 1u is a 4 liter and the ls1 is a 5.7 that's pretty impressive numbers per liter on the 1u.
Driving differences:
The 1u has tons of torque. more than any other Toyota I can think of here in the usa aside from the newer UR series v8's. The power is super smooth and the engine runs smooth also. The ls1 obviously has more power but it's also 2-4X as much to do the swap. I did my Cressida with the 1uz and manual transmission for about 2500$ and the ls1 after all the custom parts I needed to make it fit cost almost 8000$ to do.

Back about 6 years ago I had a ram charger with 36" swampers and a 318ci (5.2l) v8. The 1uz shits all over that v8. So I'd say it wouldn't have any issues with larger wheels on heavier axles.

My original idea was to try and build something really light so I could get away with lighter, cheaper axles. I allready have a one ton jeep buggy. The problem is that 4cyl motors weigh only slightly less than a 1uz or LS1 and make a third of the power. It became pretty obvious what direction to go I'm just not sure of the axles holding up.

Since it would be going in a custom tube chassis, I can't see either one being harder or more expensive to fit. The LS might be more expensive simply because there are more off the shelf aftermarket solutions, but that would make the conversion easier so its really a wash.

I'm really tempted to use the 1uz simply because its not as common. I understand it, but I'm really getting tire of LS this, that and the other thing.

Thanks,
Kevo

1uz is super cheap.. takes like 8 wires to run , no need to get a computer reflashed.

stock ls1 rev limiter is 6200 rpms 1uz is 7200 rpms..

while that might not matter to some..

with my rig and gears ect.

with my front case in high , rear in low , 5th gear ,6200 rpms is 89 mph.

same set up at 7200rpms is 103 mph

so say me and you come out of a rock section to a 10 mile smooth desert stretch before the finish line neck and neck you have ls1 i have my 1uz.

that 14 mph difference (or 1000 rpms ) would be really nice.. and i wouldn't have to shit into high

as for my set up.. the toyota t cases are by far the weak link!

I'm running full 30 spline longfield fj80 shafts and birfs and have a 9.5 ring gear in front axle.. not worried about them at all my rig is light

also the 1uz is going to handle getting driven hard all day all the time a lot better than the ls1

plus if stock isn't enough meh turbo it keep everything stock except ecu and have 500 hp for the cost of a ls1 with re flashed computer

Any idea what your buggy weighs? Other than the trans this would seem to be an ideal lightweight drivetrain. Your running 21 spline duals correct with stock outputs? I'm still not sure if I'd run an A340 to toyota duals, or an AW4 to a np241 or d300. Its the same trans, its just the tailhousing adapters that change allowing you to bolt up toyota t-cases or american t-cases. I wish I had the money for an atlas!

Do you think a stock 80 front would hold up to 37" tires?

Kevo

a v8 with 37s and 8 inch ring gear is asking alot but i guess it depends how you drive..

right now i have dual 21 spline cases.. adapter to run a landrover lt230 is in the works hopefully

id like to think my rig weighs 3k .. but im sure its probably more
