Hey guys,

I just picked up a beater ‘99 ls400 to play with when I’m not messing with my sc430.

The ls400 doesn’t have reverse at the moment and I could likely fix the issue with some time but I have a buddy willing to give me a transmission for $200 out of an 02 sc430. They are both the 5spd a650e so I’m wondering if you can confirm or deny that I can just plug and play the transmission from the sc430 into the 99 LS400.

thanks for any help.

Did some research on replacing the transmission on my 2002 SC430. Found that the A650E transmission is used in a myriad of models: IS300, GS300, GS400, GS430, LS400, LS430, SC400, SC430, RS200.
Opinions about their interchangeability vary on this forum (and elsewhere).
Wikipedia says the V8 A650E has internals different from the V6 A650E. Moreover I found a post from dale_b at driftworks.com (sorry I can't post url's yet) who found the part numbers of housing and internals as much differing as being the same between a GS430 and GS300. https://jiofilocalhtml.run https://forpc.onl

Same vein: What about putting one from a GS430/SC430 into a GS400? I've heard the valve bodies are different even in those contexts.

Did your swap work out OP?

Do not do it
It will have harsh 1-2/2-3 upshift and downshift and a few other things you won't like
ls/gs400 (vvti) and ls/sc/gs430 (5 speed) transmissions have different valve bodies and different control parameters
It's ok to swap valve body from your old transmission to new one however

But it's what we call crap carving

How harsh are we talking? My main complaint with the A650e behind a V8 is that it’s too soft...

It'll probably have a different converter as well
