Project Thread 3.3ltr whipple into Ls400

The 1UZFE EGR Delete Kit is available for sale here.
HI Fasteddie,

Yep, the gearbox was modified to suit this engine combo an MV said that it was good an rated it for 900HP.

From my understanding, HP is not wont kills a gearbox, its torque?

There is a person that i know, that is using the same type of gearbox as me behind a turbo 2JZ, they had problems with there box, but they blow the seal out off the pump inside the box? Not sure if it the same issue as what i having?

I dont monitor the gearbox temp, but i do run a external 11 row trans cooler.
I am looking at setting up some gauges now to monitor engine water temp, engine oil temp, engine oil pressure, water to air intercooler temp(when installed) and now a gearbox temp.

UPDATE

Will it looks like the auto in my car is stuffed?
The cooler for the auto is a 21 row, not a 11 row as in last post.

We flushed the old oil out off the auto, then placed the car on the dyno for a couple of runs to see if the auto will play up, after about 5 minutes on the dyno, NO GEARS at all, no forward or reverse

Now the cooler was getting warm when we where on the dyno doing a couple off pulls, but not hot hot and when the box started to played up the cooler was stoned cold?

Not sure what the issues is here now with it, have a feeling that the main drive pump may be stuffed or there are other issues with this box?
And no, have not dont NO burnouts or line lockers in it to cause auto to shit itself?

So now we are looking at ripping the auto out, an replacing it with a R154:biggrin: with a brass button clutch.

If you want some advice skip the R154 and go straight for a T56 or the Tremec TKO600...more money in the short term but cheaper and less hasle in the long run.

At 20psi will will break the R154.

A used T56 (or better yet a TR6060) can be had for good money and no more trouible to fit than the R154.

A new Tremec is the way i went and no regrets at all...4 years of caning and not even the hint of a whine. Shifts great (better than the getrag 6 speed) and being new there's good piece of mind i wasn't inheriting a problem.

Yiou have spent money in all the right places so far, don't skimp now ;)

im trying to keep it all toyota (JDM), so to speak?
was looking at a supra 6 speed, but missed out on it so i have a 5 speed (R154).
there is a common problem with these box's, its the curclip on the shaft that breaks an allows the gears to move an whamo blown box?

there is a simple mod that will fix that problem, weld it? hahahah

now just waiting for some funds to arrange the clutch kit an bellhousing so i can put the car back on the road.

I still have a couple of issues or things to sort out on the car still?

have to fix the tacho? its funny, the std ecu uses a 4cyl pulse to dash for tacho, while the standalone ecu uses a 8 cyl pulse, so at 2000rpm at the engine, it shows 4000 rpm at the dash, hahahah, eazy fix (jay car special).

have somethink sucking the guts out of the battery if left still for a week? not sure what it is yet, its not injectors, cops or pumps, or may be the battery may not be getting a good charged feed from the alternater since its in the boot now, not sure yet, still investergating this?

made arranges for a custom alloy 65mm thick raditator to be done once the trans is fixed.

have started working on a w2a intercooler setup for this combo
going to use like a 2"h x 6"w x 10"l w2a thickrow core, an mounted it in a adaptor housing that is 1 3/4" tall an have about 1/2" of the core sticking out below the housing (may go for taller core an housing as this is not final yet), an a cutout section on top the length of the core.
The heat exchange raditator will be mounted in front of a/c raditator an a chiller tank in the boot, so pump from tank to intercooler, from here to heat exchange, then pump from heat exchange back to tank, thats the idea!!.

An yes, i will need to change my belt an redo my bonnet for the intercooler.

I am looking at changing (or adding on to it) the front plate on the motor for the belt system an add a adjustable tensioner instead off a fixed 1, going to make a section go all the way up to the snout of the SC, so i can use it as a brace for the snout, but too also place a fixed pulley just under the SC pulley too ensure good belt wrap around on the SC pulley, this will help to limit belt breaking an belt jumping.

pic below of the intercooler idea!!

Ok, time for a update!!

Im not going to run a R154 now, after making a heap of calls around the place i am going to go a Tremac T56 or a TKO 6 speed box instead.

The boys at castlemaine rodshop where helpful, but explained that my setup is not really suitable with there combo, this was the way i was going to go?

The main 2 people that has help me with this choice is
Neil at Rush Imports, http://www.rushimports.com.au/
John at Alloy Race Components, http://www.alloyrace.com/

Using this box only requires me to use a adapter plate between the auto bellhousing to gearbox, sweet :D but i will need to re-modify my tailshaft again:(

Next issue is the clutch an flywheel combo?

Im going to use a Billet Aluminium Flywheel which is custom made for a Lexus V8's which has a 6060t Aluminium Body Armour Plate Insert with a twin plate 9" organic clutch.

Neil is in the process off putting it all together "this combo" as we speak, with the final results on testing done in may? a month away after some flogging on the track and dragstrip.

I have asked to be kept in the loop of testing as this is what i will be installing in my car which i will be able to proved them with some extra test results and feedback.

So, in short, the car is going to sit still now the next couple of weeks till neil finishs the testing, which will allow me time to do water injection, water 2 air intercooler an some other tweaks i need to do on the car.

update
my new throttle body for my project has just arrived today :D (same as a 5.4ltr ford mustang)

So now i can start work on the new intake system for the supercharger, and make up some new ducting to the air box.

im still working on a design for the water to air intercooler system, where i will be using 4 to 8 Laminova intercooler cores in a custom housing, but i have to make sure that i can find a new belt to drive the sc when i install the water to air intercooler system

an yes, the old twin single throttle bodies setup an ducting to air boxs will be up for sale soon, as they are nolonger required for this project if someone is interested in them soon?

Hi xr8tt

yes i have been in contact with mal woods in qld, about a gearbox combo for this car, but i was looking at a t56 or a tr6060 (6 speed gearboxs).

Neil from rush imports in ACT also does the install kit for the same combo.

im just waiting on funds to do it now.

Madhouse LS400

Man this motor sounds HOT-HOT-HOT !!!!!! and yeah.... i reckon closer to 850HP not the piddling 500HP your talking about.....
One question though.... Why didn't you start with a UCF21.. 1998-2001 ???
... better car all round... better motor, better brakes, better suspension,
better 5 speed transmission, better interior (more of that beautiful walnut timber) better sound system... infact, better everything..... so I'm just curious...... ????

1998 LS400 with Torsen 2

Since I'm tired of one wheel drive and after months of trawling all the Lexus and V8 Toyota forums, the concensus is a Mk4 Supra TT auto or 5MT Torsen 2 will fit. I'll have to dissasemble the LS diff, remove the open diff case and replace it with the ball tear'in Torsen unit, use my standard gearing, re-assemble then get ready for some serious mega drifting, mega tyre smok'in,heart thump'in proper 2 wheel burnouts.... No more one wheel driving for me.... no-sir-ee.... :)

Thanks fastegg

figures i was quoting was kw's not hp, so 500kwrw is about 750hp on 16psi after run in on a race tune?
there wasnt many ufc21's around here, an they where going for over $30k when i came across this car 6yrs ago, an then i payed $15k for it.

Im not 1 for stock factory items, the engine i have is better then stock, so are my brakes, suspension, diff and sound system and you will not find 1 like this ls400 anyway :D

Maybe some second hand on the market soon ??
They've been in Falcons / Commodores for some time now ???

Xr8tt

dont forget you can flywheels, clutchs and bellhousing from NZ Trade me too?

i have been talking to peter from extreme clutchs here in sydney,
he will machine up the adaptor plate that i need for the gearbox, an do a twin plate carbon clutch an bullet flywheel for $2k :D
the cheapest ive found anywhere, as the average price is around $3k+

also, he has a very nice cnc machine an we have been talking about machining up a w2a intercooling housing for laminova intercooler cores, but im still working on a cad design for it, just debating if to go for a 6 core or a 8 core unit?
