Default Any R154 Experts?

Has anyone here pulled apart a R154 and/or rebuilt it?

Someone i know is about to pull a R154 apart for the first time. Any tips? Any diagrams of the tranny so he can put it back together? Is there a rebuild kit out there you can DIY?

Is there a kit or somthing out there to over haul the tranny or do you just buy what needs to be replaced?

I didn't see a rebuilt kit listed on Marlin's site for the R154, but Marlin has stated he's rebuilt them. Maybe he can piece something together into a kit for you.

HI,
Has your friend rebuilt any gearbox's before?
Does he have a shop press?
I sourced all my rebuild parts from the States, as it was much cheaper than I could get them for in Aus, Ill have a look where I got them from and post back in a little while.
You will still need to order the correct thickness circlips from Toyota as the box is being re assembled, they may stock them in the US but I had to order them Individually from Japan.
The problem is as you assemble the main shaft the clearences have changed due to wear from what you had originally, so all your shaft circlips will be to small. you will need to measure your first circlip size, get it ,install it and then press on the next lot of gears etc before you can get the next circlip size, this process must be followed in order to properly clearence the box upon reassembly.
Some transmission shops dont do this(see dodgy workmanship) and this is "one" of the reasons why some rebuilt Toyota transmissions are better than others.
There is also an after market intermediate bearing carrier available in the US depending on what your friend will be doing with the box this is an option.
Always replace the first gear thrust washer with a new one at a minimum or get one made from chromoly, however chromoly does not have the same self lubricating qualitys as the original cast Toyota item and itself can cause other problems.
How much power is your friend planning on putting through the box?
If your friend has had some transmission rebuilding experiance he shouldn't find it too hard , however if he is a novice and just looking to save some dollars I would suggest getting it done by a reputable transmission specialist.

Cheers
tRev
